Prof. Adrian Bachtold obtained PhD at Basel University in 1999 under supervision of Prof. Christian Shönenberger, then did his first postdoc in collaboration with Prof. Paul McEuen at UC Berkeley and his second one with Prof. Cees Dekker at Delft. He obtained Chargé de recherche CNRS (permanent position) at the ENS in Paris from 2001-2004. Adrian moved to Barcelona in 2005, he became Professor at ICN-CSIC in Barcelona from 2005-2012, and he has been a professor at ICFO (The Institute of Photonic Sciences) in Barcelona since 2012. He has published 96 publications, including 3 in Science, 15 in Nature Family, and 21 in PRL, in the fields of nano-mechanics and mesoscopic quantum physics at the nanoscale. Prof. Adrian Bachtold has won many awards and distinctions, including APS Fellow, medal of the CNRS, EURYI award of the European Commission, and three ERC Grants (Starting Grant ERC, Advanced Grant ERC, and PoC ERC).

报告摘要:

An open question in mechanics is whether mechanical resonators can be made nonlinear with vibrations approaching the quantum ground state. This requires engineering a mechanical nonlinearity far beyond what has been realized thus far. In this talk, I will present a mechanism to boost the Duffing (also called Kerr) nonlinearity by coupling the vibrations of a nanotube resonator to single-electron tunneling in a quantum dot and by operating the system in the ultrastrong coupling regime. Remarkably, thermal vibrations become highly nonlinear when lowering the temperature. In a second series of experiments, we couple the nanotube vibrations and a double quantum dot qubit, which is readout with a superconducting resonator, enabling us to observe nonlinear vibrations at the zero-point motion level. Our work paves the way for realizing mechanical qubits, quantum simulators emulating the electron-phonon coupling, and macroscopic quantum superposition states.
