报告人简介

Dr. Valentin Petrov is a Senior Research Associate at the Max Born Institute in Berlin, Germany, with a distinguished career in laser physics and nonlinear optics. He holds a Ph.D. from Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena and has extensive international experience, including fellowships in Japan and France. His research focuses on ultrashort pulse generation, mode-locked lasers, solid-state lasers, and nonlinear frequency conversion from VUV to mid-IR. Dr. Petrov has authored over 515 publications, including 82 in Optics Letters, and has an h-index of 60 (Google Scholar). He has supervised numerous students and postdocs, coordinated multiple EU and national projects, and served as a topical editor for Optics Letters and on various international conference committees.

报告摘要

I will give a historical perspective how our group advanced in the 1990s towards femtosecond pulse generation in the VUV part of the spectrum based on the newly developed Ti:sapphire laser technology and the available nonlinear optical crystals. Then I will review the efforts towards 160 nm (5th harmonic) generation and achieving yet shorter wavelengths by newly developed borate crystals. I will discuss the three possibilities for using nonlinear crystals in this difficult spectral range, birefringence based phase-matching (PM), quasi-phase matching (QPM), and random QPM as well as the available materials. Finally I will summarize our previous efforts using non-phase-matched second-harmonic generation (SHG) and random QPM in strontium tetraborate (SBO) to achieve the ultimately short wavelengths down to 121 nm, the transparency limit of this crystal.
